iPhones hiding conversions

Your phone rang. Your inbox filled up. And Google Ads says the campaign barely converted.

For one of our clients, about a quarter of their conversions had this problem. The leads were real; Google just couldn’t connect them to the ad click, and most of them came from iPhones.

If your Google Ads lead counts look lower than what your phone and inbox say, our PPC team explains why iPhones hide conversions, how we count them anyway, and whether Google Tag Gateway is worth setting up.

The short version:

  • Your forms and call recordings are the source of truth. Not the Google Ads dashboard.
  • Feed those real leads back to Google. Otherwise it learns the wrong lesson.
  • Google Tag Gateway helps a little. It doesn’t fix Safari.

WHY ARE IPHONES HIDING YOUR GOOGLE ADS CONVERSIONS?

Has this happened to you? A new lead came in, but Google can’t see the click it came from.

When someone clicks your ad, Google adds a click ID (the GCLID) to the end of the URL. Your conversion tag reads it when the form gets submitted, and that’s how Google ties the lead to the ad.

Apple’s privacy features get in the way. App Tracking Transparency (since iOS 14) limits tracking across apps, and Safari’s Link Tracking Protection can strip tracking parameters from links in some situations. And as of iOS 17, the GCLID disappears. This means the lead still shows up in your inbox, but not in Google Ads.

Then it compounds. Google’s bidding sees iPhone users clicking and “not converting,” so it spends less on them. A real slice of your market starts to look like it doesn’t buy.

If Google can’t see the conversion, it learns the wrong lesson.

HOW DO WE COUNT REAL CONVERSIONS WHEN GOOGLE CAN’T SEE THEM?

We count leads where they land, not where Google says they landed.

At Strategy, we report actuals to clients from form submissions and call tracking (CallRail), next to what Google Ads reports. When the two don’t match, our numbers are the ones we trust. On one past account, the forms showed more than 10 leads that Google Ads had never counted.

You can run the same check yourself. Pick one week. Count your form submissions and your answered calls from ads. Put that next to the Google Ads conversion count for the same week. If the gap is big, you have this problem.

Google is giving you a better place to look. On Oct 28, 2026, Search Engine Land reported that Google Ads added an All Conversions tab that shows every conversion action in one view. It helps you see what Google counts. It still can’t show you what Google missed.

If you work with an agency, this should be part of their month-one check. [See what to hold your agency to in the first 90 days]

BEFORE GOOGLE TAG GATEWAY: WHY SHOULD YOU STILL SEND GOOD DATA BACK TO GOOGLE?

Knowing your real numbers fixes your reporting. It doesn’t fix Google’s bidding. Google has to learn them too.

Two ways to do this:

  • Enhanced conversions. When someone submits a form, a hashed version of their email or phone number goes to Google, which can match it to a signed-in user even when the click ID got stripped. This is Google’s stated fallback for lost click IDs.
  • Offline and call imports. Send your real phone leads and closed deals back into Google Ads. We covered how in why your best phone leads never reach Google.

Neither one recovers every lost conversion. Together, they give Google a much more accurate picture of who buys.

IS GOOGLE TAG GATEWAY WORTH IT? AN HONEST TAKE

Google Tag Gateway serves your Google tags from your own domain instead of Google’s, so the browser treats them as first-party. You can turn it on through a CDN like Cloudflare.

Google says it lifts measured signals by about 14%. That’s Google’s claim, from Google’s page.

We’re cautious. Here’s what practitioners report so far (forum and independent tests, not our data):

  • It doesn’t fix Safari stripping the GCLID. If the click ID is gone from the URL, serving the tag from your domain doesn’t bring it back (r/PPC discussion).
  • Measured uplift looks smaller than Google’s number. Independent tests report roughly 7 to 8% (Tracking Chef; Loves Data). Test it against a parallel control before you trust any number.
  • It doesn’t bypass consent. It doesn’t replace consent mode v2, and some ad blockers still catch it
  • It’s not additive with server side tagging. If you already run server-side GTM, reports say you won’t gain much more.
  • It can break things. Some users report problems on React apps and behind reverse proxies. Test in GTM preview first.

Our take: turn it on if it’s a low-effort switch for your setup, then measure. Don’t expect it to solve the iPhone problem.

Google Tag Gateway is a partial fix. The forms and calls you record yourself are the source of truth.

COUNT THE LEADS YOU CAN SEE, WITH OR WITHOUT GOOGLE TAG GATEWAY

Still not sure what to do to get accurate lead tracking through Google Ads. Start by following these steps:

  • Count real leads from your forms and call recordings every week.
  • Send them back to Google with enhanced conversions and call imports.
  • Treat Google Tag Gateway as a test, not a fix.

Over 15+ years, our clients have seen a 16.92X ROAS, $45.7M+ generated, and 31,300+ conversions. Book a tracking check with Strategy and we’ll show you how many of your leads Google is missing.

GOOGLE TAG GATEWAY FAQ

IS GOOGLE TAG GATEWAY WORTH IT?

It’s worth testing if it’s easy to turn on for your site. Independent tests show a smaller lift than Google claims, and it doesn’t fix iPhone click IDs getting stripped.

DOES GOOGLE TAG GATEWAY FIX SAFARI/IOS STRIPPING THE GCLID?

No. Practitioners report that if Safari removes the click ID from the URL, serving the tag from your own domain doesn’t restore it.

GOOGLE TAG GATEWAY VS. SERVER-SIDE GTM: DO I NEED BOTH?

Usually not. Practitioners report little added benefit from Tag Gateway if you already run server-side Google Tag Manager.

HOW MUCH UPLIFT DOES GOOGLE TAG GATEWAY REALLY GIVE?

Google claims about 14%. Independent tests report roughly 7 to 8%. Measure it against a control on your own site.

No. It doesn’t replace consent mode v2, and some ad blockers still block it.

CAN GOOGLE TAG GATEWAY BREAK MY SITE?

Some users report issues on React apps and behind reverse proxies. Test it in GTM preview before going live.

WHAT ARE ENHANCED CONVERSIONS, AND DO THEY HELP ON IPHONE?

Enhanced conversions send hashed first-party data, like an email from a form, to Google so it can match the conversion without a click ID. They help recover some iPhone conversions, not all.

WHY IS MY GOOGLE ADS CONVERSION TRACKING NOT WORKING?

Common causes: privacy features stripping the click ID, a broken or missing tag, or phone leads that never get imported. Compare your form and call counts to Google Ads for the same week to find the gap.
